Helping families address difficult conversations before they become permanent divides.

Family facilitation is not therapy, mediation, or legal advice. It uses the same ground rules mediators rely on—confidentiality, no blaming, focusing on interests rather than positions and one voice at a time, to help family members name what is going on and what each person needs. The goal is not to solve the problem on the spot. The goal is to create space for everyone to be heard, build shared understanding, and identify a clear path forward together.

Why Common Ground?

Family Conflict Needs Structure, Not More Pressure

Karen Broxton Carroll, Founder, brings more than 20 years of experience in conflict resolution, including mediation of civil and domestic court-connected cases, specialized mediation training, and senior leadership in the mental health field. She holds a degree in Psychology from the University of Georgia and has completed extensive training in trauma-informed care and conflict resolution. She helps families move through difficult conversations by combining active listening, neutrality, and clear communication with practical tools for de-escalation, reframing, and finding workable solutions. My goal is to create a structured, respectful space where everyone feels heard and families can strengthen their connections instead of remaining stuck in conflict.

Common Questions

What Families Ask First

Is Common Ground Family Solutions therapy?

No. Common Ground Family Solutions is a nonclinical service focused on communication, mediation, and practical family agreements. We do not diagnose or provide mental health treatment.

Who can participate in a family mediation?

The right participants depend on the issue. Sessions may include co-parents, adult siblings, parents and teens, or other family members directly involved.

Do all family members need to agree to start?

Not always. One person can begin with an introductory conversation to understand the options. Participation in a full session works best when everyone understands the purpose and agrees to a respectful process.

What happens during the first conversation?

We discuss what is happening, who is involved, and what you want to change. Then Common Ground Family Solutions recommends a practical format and next step.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions are available remotely or in a neutral location. We will discuss the most comfortable format when you reach out.

Does Common Ground provide mediation?

No. While we have extensive experience in mediation, Common Ground Family Solutions offers private, voluntary facilitation services that are separate from court proceedings. Any agreements reached during these sessions are informal and are not legally binding unless formalized through the appropriate legal process.

Is this process confidential?

Yes. This is a confidential process. Notes may only be taken for multiple sessions for purposes of continuity and clarification. All notes will be destroyed once sessions have concluded.

Can you provide mental health diagnosis?

No. Common Ground does not provide any counseling, therapy, or psychological services.

Are there circumstances in which family facilitation may not be appropriate?

Family facilitation may not be appropriate when there are concerns involving abuse or neglect, domestic violence, threats, intimidation, or fear of speaking freely; an immediate safety or mental health crisis; substance use that prevents safe participation; or legal circumstances, such as active litigation or protective orders, that could compromise the process. The safety and well-being of everyone involved are the priority, and alternative resources or professional support may be recommended when needed.

Do you provide legal advice or representation?

No. Common Ground Family Solutions provides neutral facilitation to help families communicate effectively, work through conflict, and develop practical solutions. We do not provide legal advice or representation. Our role is to support productive conversations and help families explore options, while legal questions and concerns should be directed to a qualified attorney.
